Besti vibes in the 'house

Reese Yeates is a young person from the Roundhouse Studios, who left London for the first time ever to perform at this year’s Bestival. He had something of a life-changing experience, so he wrote to us to say thanks and his story inspired us to share it with you fellow Bestivalites. So, here it is, in Reese's words..

"I got involved in Roundhouse Studios, when my YOT (youth offending team) worker recommended that I sign up for a project. I met Angus, the Roundhouse Youth Support Worker, and stayed in touch with him. Angus knew I had always wanted to be an actor, so when the opportunity to perform at Bestival came up he asked me to get involved, and I jumped at the chance. I’ve been having some bad stuff go down lately in London, and I really needed get out of the city. I’ve never left before. So it was a great opportunity in a lot of ways.

"We were asked by the festival to come up with a walkabout performance for the woods, so we worked out a funny routine about being in a (bad) beat boxing band.

"When I was traveling down with the rest of the Roundhouse group, I was looking at everyone else thinking, I am not going to get on with these people. They’re so different from me, why am I doing this? I was also really worried that the show wouldn’t go down well, as it’s not typically arty.

"When we got there and I got to know the rest of the Roundhouse team, it was wicked. And the festival itself was insane. Like nothing I’ve experienced before. I’ve never been somewhere where everyone is so happy and just up for a good time. No bad vibes at all. I was opened up to loads of new music- The Cure, Primal Scream- I’d never even heard of these bands before. My favourite performance was definitely the Charlie Chaplin thing (Diego as Charlie on the Alfresco Stage). He was properly talented and a really inspiring performer.

"When we were performing our walkabout show, it was amazing, the best part of being there for sure! The audience reaction was crazy- they were taking photos, getting involved, asking for our details. And the ladies were loving it- kissing us and everything! It got everyone excited and was so much fun!

"I wish I was back at Bestival now, but I’ve got other things going on. Next up is NYT’s Playing Up and I’m also auditioning for the Roundhouse Theatre Company, which will be about developing a show for the World Shakespeare Festival. I’d love to go back to Bestival next year with something bigger - it was such a wicked festival!"

The Roundhouse Studios offer creative opportunities for young people between the ages of 11-25. They brought a variety of performers to Bestival including spoken word, theatre and cabaret. Find out more here

Sunday Best star remixer soundtracks Bestival 2011 video highlights!

Sunday Best
's bonafide remixer to the stars Julian Peck AKA Fear of Theydon is fast becoming the go-to-man for adding the extra spark to any release. And you can hear four of his ace remixes right here as they soundtrack this year's video highlights from each day at Bestival 2011.

As a former Sunday Best employee, Julian has remixed most of the Sunday Best singles since 2008. Tracing from his Aeroplane-inspired Cosmic Dub of dan le sac Vs Scroobius Pip’s ‘Thou Shalt Always Kill’ to his very heady, futuristic Slow Motion Dub of Beardyman’s ‘Where Does Your Mind Go?’ and the Grand National classic 'Drink To Moving On'; wrap your ears round a cherry-picked selection of Julian's melodic reworkings below.

Besti-mix 67: Skinny Lister

We're an open-minded bunch here at Bestival, as all of you who've attended our madcap musical jamboree's over the years will attest! And much as you'll find everything from wigged out psychedelia to post-dubstep via acoustic folk, gazillion-miles-an-hour jump-up polka and majestic heart-tugging goth-pop (take a bow, The Cure!) at Bestival, likewise our exclusive Besti-mixes run the genre-trashing gauntlet.

Our latest, compiled by the "UK's hardest working live outfit" (a mere 400 gigs this summer!) punk-folk revelers Skinny Lister, being a case in point. As the band prepare to unleash their debut album (produced by Bat For Lashes and James Yorkston expert knob-twiddler David Wrench) on an unsuspecting world later this year, this lot give us the skinny (sorry!) on what makes 'em tick with this glorious selection of both classic and contemporary folk and rock, featuring the well known likes of The Libertines, The Smiths, The Pogues and The Clash alongside the band's old friends Phil Reed, Roger Wilson and George Thomas (the latter being Lorna and Max from the band's Dad!), with other tracks taken from various singing sessions up and down the land on the band's endless travels!

Get on the bus people, the soundtrack is purpose built for a party-hardy adventure, Besti-styleee...

Ross Allen's Meltdown: Best of All!

It's all been about Bestival this weekend... we had a ball this year.

It has always been up there as a festival, and yes I am biased, having known the da Banks from a very long time ago and having been a regular guest at the original Sunday Best sessions all those years ago on Wandsworth Road. Well, to say they have come along way is an understatement. This years expanded edition was the best yet and I had a great time. Definitely my favourite festival of the season this year. It normally is Glastonbury but I think weather and size made Bestival just that bit more manageable and, being that I am ageing (rapidly after the last few years at so many of these things), also far more enjoyable.

I love the way that Bestival takes the best bits of Glastonbury, the outer fields, the creativity and the nuttiness and adds to it with a great line up and this years was pretty ridiculous. There was so much to see and do and basically never a dull moment. The most boring bit of the weekend was on Thursday when I got roped into hiring a camper van and had to suffer a full inventory check of the entire contents of said van.

"6 forks, 6 spoons, 6 knifes... gap... 1 potato peeler, 1 drying rack...." he could, and did, go on. Obviously this is all basic procedure and all very well apart from the fact that you are the other side of London from the gig you are meant to be at, aware that the van has a top speed of 40mph and that you have 30 mins to get there. I was soooh irritated. Though the van came into its own when post gig I got picked up from home, refused to join in the excitable antics of few pre Bestival ravers too keen/greedy to wait, and got in the bunk. I was out until I woke up at the site ready to check in. I was soooh happy. I almost forgot about the inventory!

I do love seeing a festival, especially one of such splendour, you get it at Glastonbury when you look over the site and see a small town glowing and sitting pretty in the distance. We had this at Bestival as it slunk down the (albeit mini) valley. It looked great, it's bigger than before - it's good thing, it needed to expand - it's definitely come a long way since the first one - but the attention to detail hasn't been lost, or at least I didn't think it had. Crews like Mutoid Waste, Arcadia and Block 9 (who's Swamp Shack was another amazing creation in a list that includes the legendary NY Downlow from Glastonbury and Love Box. A Guy Called Gerald played a killer drum and bass set in there on Saturday night which was amazing though we could have done with out Normski. The guy in the back room bar was playing some quality mid tempo Boogie and Disco too, the trannies were loving it !) plus a myriad of other individuals add the extra dimension that takes this festival away from the corporate cash tastic enterprises that so many of these 'festivals' are or are trying to be. The food is decent on the whole and the music was fantastic.

Robert Smith from The Cure's favourite act at Bestival...

Robert Smith from The Cure's favourite act at Bestival?  Our very own Kitty Daisy and Lewis no less! Here's the video to their forthcoming single 'Don't Make A Fool Out Of Me', out 24th October 2011 on Sunday Best Recordings and taken from the album ‘Smoking in Heaven’.

Bestival Arenas 2011: Swamp Shack

A hugely exciting addition to the Bestival Arenas this year is the Swamp Shack . Nestled in the strange and lovely Wishing Tree Field and built by Trash City co-creative director Ruby Blues and Block 9, the set-design pioneers behind the legendary NYC Downlow Gay bar. So this place is going to look fairly AWESOME to begin with.

And, in true Bestival style we've filled it with some pretty amazing acts too, for starters there's incredible cabaret from Ophelia Blitz and some 'Deliverance'-inspired walkabout from The Invisible Circus! Starring: Ryan Styles, Vicky Butterfly, Kitty Bang Bang, Fancy Chance, Roxy Velvet, Leo Hedman, Missy Macabre, Voodoo Chile, Dusty Limits, Missy Macabre, MC Gaffy, Lady Ane Angel and Rasp Thorne.

There'll be some late night jungle drumming from A Guy Called Gerald and plenty of twisted Southern soaked blues from the fine array of DJs.

So, do yourselves a favour: grab some moonshine and head down to the Swamp Shack, you may just end up with some voodoo in you this weekend!

Folk Bestival Cardi Competition

Every year our good friends at Folk Clothing make us a limited edition Bestival cardigan... which we love. To be in with a chance of winning one for yourself post your best photo on their Facebook wall, either 'Best picture overall at Bestival' or 'Best Folk related picture', by Friday 16th September.

Bestival Radio Podcast 2011 Episode 2

With one day to go until the live broadcast begins, Reverend Milo and Lucy Pink give you a sneak peak of the key acts who are signed up to do shows on Bestival Radio this year. From Magnetic Man to Grandmaster Flash, Sound of Rum to Joakim, the radio will be letting the pop stars, rock stars and divas take over the airwaves for the whole weekend. We will be across the Isle of Wight 24/7 on 87.7FM, and available to stream around the world via bestival.net.

We are are also over the moon to announce that New York's coolest radio station, East Village Radio, whose DJs include Steve Lilywhite, Andy Rourke, Mike Joyce and even Mark Ronson, will be taking a full live stream of our very own Bestival FM as they 'Stop Making Sense' all weekend long. So now our music loving cousins across the pond can get a proper dose of the Bestival vibes!

Bestival Arenas 2011: The Ambient Forest

If you go down in the woods in Robin Hill over the weekend you're sure of a big surprise! This year, the woods on the site are playing host to the Ambient Forest, a place - as the name suggests - of calm and enlightenment.

Over the weekend you'll be able to listen to Howard Marks spinning some yarns, poetry and other spoken word tidbits curated by Scroobius Pip for his brand new project, the Satin Lizard Lounge.

We've also heard tale that some of Marisa Carninsky's prodigies will be escaping from the tarot card village in order to give you a taste of the next big things on the cabaret scene.

And if all that wasn't weird enough, the David Lynch* Foundation will be teaching the art of meditation in the forest too.

So if you fancy getting lost, the Ambient Forest wouldn't be the worst place to do it.

*David Lynch won't be there... and the meditation won't be as odd as his films, although it will be just as wonderful

Pants to Poverty Attempt 6 World Records At Bestival 2011

The UK’s favourite ethical underwear brand Pants to Poverty will celebrate the close of summer at Bestival by attempting to break SIX pants-inspired Guinness World Records.

After setting breaking two Guinness world records at Bestival already and continuing on their quest to break every single pants-related Guinness World Record, Pants to Poverty will host the world record attempts at the Bestival bandstand, at 6:05pm on Sunday 11th September. This year, Pants to Poverty will be attempting to break the following world records:

- most number of pants thrown at a Tom Jones lookalike
- world’s largest thong (measuring at a whopping 12 x 6m)
- most underpants jumped into under a minute
- most underpants worn by one person at one time
- world’s largest collection of donated underpants
- world’s largest gathering of people in just their pants

The last two on that list are where you can help, if you can be at the bandstand wearing just pants (you don't have to be topless too!) that will help hugely, and if you have any clean and unwanted pants that you'd like to donate to add to the record breaking collection that would also be brilliant.

So remember - pack your pants and get ready to show them off for a great cause on Sunday!

In support of their brilliant new album, ‘Hot Sauce Committee Part 2’, the Beastie Boys have revisited their classic video ‘Fight for Your Right (to Party)’ inviting a jaw-dropping who’s who from the film industry, including Elijah Wood, Danny McBride, Seth Rogen, Susan Sarandon, Will Ferrell, Jack Black and more to take part in Fight For Your Right – Revisited. And you know what? You can see it for yourself in full on the Main Stage and in the Big Top at Bestival this weekend!

"It takes place in 1986 when the ‘Fight for Your Right (To Party)’ music video finishes shooting" Beastie Boy Mike D told us, "... and then the hijinks ensue. In film terms, this is a period piece."

To celebrate all this we offered you lucky lot the chance to win some stellar Beastie Boys merch, including the album on double vinyl, plus back cat CD and DVDs and, for the winner, a golden pair of Bestival 2011 tickets - and, after sifting through over 1200 entries(!) we can now announce that Brian Nash has scooped the main prize. Congratulations Brian, we'll see you down the front this weekend for the screening!

For now, whet your appetites with this, a little vid that shows how that tasty vinyl gets made.

Felix & Sam like to ride their bicycles to Bestival (& back) for charity

Here at Besti-HQ, we always like to hear the audacious adventures of people journeying down to Bestival. And in an exemplary homage to our theme this year, Felix and Sam, two Bestival ‘diva’ veterans, have cooked up the rather fine plan of bicycling down to Bestival (and back!), dressed as Freddie Mercury and Madonna respectively.

They are raising money for the Samaritans, a very worthwhile cause and one close to our hearts, and their charity fundraising page is justgiving.com/FelixandSam.

Every penny helps, so please dig deep for the Samaritans. And if you see the boys struggling down a random B-road on their bikes, give them a toot and a sandwich – they’ll need all the help they can get!

Oh, and in case you were wondering why this article has been headed with a photo of naked girls with big hair on bicycles, watch this...

Free Tea for All!

Yes that's right, FREE TEA!  All you need to do to claim your free cup of tea is to pick up the litter in and around your tent, pop it all into the freely available black waste and green recycling (cans, plastic bottles, newspapers, leaflets, cartons) bags and take a full(ish) bag to the recycling pen next to your nearest Campsite Hub. A friendly Green Team member will make you a fresh brew to say thanks. Simple! And you can do that each and every day if you like.

This is just one way you can help us Keep Bestival Green & Tidy. Read on for some more:

1/ A TENT IS FOR LIFE, NOT JUST FOR BESTIVAL!
Please, please, please pack up your tent and take it home with you at the end of the festival. Tents are very re-usable but utterly un-recyclable so those left behind have to be sent to a landfill site. Please be a better person and help us out here. Thank you.

2/ IN THE MUSIC ARENAS...
There will be clusters of colour-coded bins all over the shop. Drop your cans in one, plastic bottles in another and then everything else can go in the black topped bin.

3/ IN THE CAMPSITES
...
There will be waste & recycling pens on all the main thoroughfares with loads of green and black bin bags tied onto them. Green for recycling (cans, plastic bottles, newspapers, leaflets, cartons) and Black for all other waste. Please grab one of each, take ‘em back to your tent and then bring ‘em back to the pens when they're getting full. And if you bring ‘em back to a pen next to a Campsite Hub you'll get a FREE CUP OF TEA for your wonderful efforts.

4. EARN EASY MONEY TO BUY MORE BEER
All beer cups and cans purchased from our bars are worth 10p each. Collect a load and return them to one of our cup and can return points and you could easily have enough money to buy yourself and your mates a round.

5. COLOURFUL COMPOST LOOS
The colourful hand-painted loos you'll see around site are cleaner, less stinky and require no water so please use them whenever you can. And your poo gets converted into compost to grow stuff afterwards, which is weird but kinda neat too!

6. THAT SAID, ANY LOO WILL DO... PLEASE JUST USE ONE OF THEM
Blokes (& some ladies)... please don't piss anywhere you feel like. Its very important that you use one of our toilets. Pissing against a fence might be ok in your back garden but the concentration of loads of you doing it on the Bestival site contaminates the land and kills off the wildlife.

7. PLEASE DON'T WASTE WATER
Bestival doesn't run off the mains, we have to bring in our own water and store it in a large reservoir. Please do use the water to drink and wash but be careful to not leave taps running. And please report any leaking standpipes to your Campsite Hub.

8. CHARGE YOUR MOBILE PHONE FOR FREE WITH 10:10!
10:10, the carbon-cutting people, have their own tent in the Tomorrow's World area of the site where you can charge your mobile for FREE via Solar and Pedal Power. They’ll also be able to help you cut your own carbon once the festival's finished.

Bestival loves you very much for reading this.

Bestival Arenas 2011 - Videopia

If you've ever harboured a secret desire to become a movie star then Bestival can literally make your dream come true! Interactive film making troupe Videopia will be parking up their mobile movie studio (candy striped vintage horsebox) in the Magic Meadow and inviting festival-goers to star in miniature tributes to Hollywood classics. You can choose between the Wizard of Oz, Back to the Future, E.T and Jaws. You just need to decide whether you're best suited to playing a great white shark, a friendly alien or a wicked witch. The films will be screened in the horsebox at the end of each day before being uploaded onto Videopia's YouTube channel... a very silly memento of a brilliant weekend!

TOP TIP: Why not pick your favourite movie now and bring and item of costume with you. Finally you can make use of those sparkly red shoes at the back of your wardrobe! Videopia will be open from 3pm - 6pm on Thursday and 1pm - 6pm Friday - Sunday. Come and find us at the entrance to the Magic Meadow, near the main stage.

Sign Up For Classic Album Sundays At Bestival

If you're the kind of person who seeks a bit of contemplation and chill out time when the going gets a little too crazy at Bestival then Classic Album Sundays played on Linn could well be just your thing. Before you start asking "but who IS Linn? and why is she allowing Pet Sounds to be played on her?" don't fret, Linn is actually an iconic turntable - so you'll be able to hear the albums in amazing clarity and detail.

This year, CAS will be playing out three classic albums during the day on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Bestival in the Cinema Room at Robin Hill. The albums reflect the headliners at the festival this year as well as the wider theme of Divas, Popstars and Rockstars. So expect classics from the likes of Prince, Amy Winehouse, PJ Harvey, DJ Shadow and more!

If you'd like to join them in their sonic sanctuary at Bestival just sign up for the CAS newsletter and check out their Facebook event page.

Full listings of the albums they'll be playing and more details about CAS at Bestival are all on the Bestival website - so go and whet your appetite!

Bestival Art Posters: DJ Shadow, PJ Harvey

As we mentioned right here on the blog a few weeks back, this year - brand new for Bestival 2011 - we super proud to present our first ever Bestival art poster competition winners, which we'll be previewing exclusively on Besti-blog.

Over the past few months we've thrown open the floodgates to the country's best young illustrators to dream up iconic poster artwork inspired by their favourite act playing at this year's Bestival. And, honest to god, the poster designs are gonna blow your socks off!

We'll be showcasing the winning 10 entries in a exhibition on-site and screen-printing 100 copies of each, which - if you're quick - you'll be able to snap up at the Screenadelica poster shop located between the Magic Meadow and Tomorrow's World fields (all proceeds go to the Bestival Foundation charity).

We've already revealed the (if we dare say so ourselves) magnificent poster art for the likes of The Cure, Brian Wilson, Mogwai and Paloma Faith, and here are two more - DJ Shadow and PJ Harvey. See you at the stall!

Bestival Arenas 2011 - Carnesky's Tarot Village

An all new promenade theatre experience premieres this year at Bestival courtesy of avant garde director Marisa Carnesky, who created Carnesky's Ghost Train - a custom built arthouse ride that toured the UK and is now installed on the Blackpool seafront.

Carnesky's Tarot Village combines real tarot readings with live performance using specially designed unique wearable sculpture installations.

Set in the Duck Down model village on the Bestival site, strange goings on emerge as we learn that the village is inhabited by colourful characters from the Major Arcana of the Tarot Deck, the Devil was last seen in the barn and Temperance is keen you should have tea with her. Meet the High Priestess in her boudoir and gaze into her eyes, including the third one.

Each audience member will receive their own unique live three card reading, but don't disturb these strange villagers too much as they may just turn on you...

Developed in partnership with the Roundhouse Studios and supported by The Arts Council the work features a cast of twelve amazing emerging performers who have trained at Marisa Carnesky's Finishing School - a series of classes and workshops held regularly at The Roundhouse.

The experience is open from 2 - 4pm then again at 4.30 - 6.30pm Friday - Saturday for audiences of up to 16 every fifteen minutes.

Its experimental, it's new, it's probably quite scary and it's definitely strange and surreal, meet performers one on one whose bodies contain the mysteries of your soul. A place where you can meet Death to talk about change, meet the Star and talk about Love, this is a show that could be a pivotal moment in your Bestival weekend!

The superstitious and the faint hearted are most welcome!
