Besti-mix 66: The 2 Bears
A pair of large, hirsute wild animals - one of whom you may recognise as a member of Hot Chip - The 2 Bears have been insouciantly re-writing the clubbing rulebook since they first got their paws on it, delivering joyous, no-holds-barred DJ sets that touch on fidgety house, electro, disco and bass music. Expressed rather magnificently, we must say, on the 'Bears - aka Joe Goddard and Raf Daddy - Besti-mix...

Ballet Rocks!
In case you were still labouring under the impression that ballet is fusty and boring, English National Ballet is returning to Bestival once more to prove you wrong. Back by popular demand, some of the world's finest classical dancers will be bringing ballet to the masses in the fields, dancing to tracks more familiar in pubs and clubs than theatres and concert halls. Jenna Lee, a soloist with the Company, has been spearheading the trend of marrying ballet with popular music for several years – Ballet Rocks, with music by Bloc Party, is still being shown on Sky Arts years after she created it, and it was her piece for Bandstand that made Rob da Bank think ballet could work at Bestival back in 2009.
Jenna remembers the buzz; "People were roaring afterwards. Men were coming up to our boys afterwards, saying, 'I want to learn how to lift a woman like that, that is so cool' ". And the trend is really catching on – there have been ballet performances at festivals across the country this year, including Camp Bestival, and Jenna is working with the streetdance crew Flawless on a piece for the Peace One Day concert at the O2.
So now finally, ballet is having its moment in the sun, from fashion to film to audience figures. The psychological thriller Black Swan showed the world the passion, dedication and commitment required by ballet at the highest level. And English National Ballet brings this passion to Bestival for these performances of a piece especially commissioned from Jenna for the main stage.
Putting thoroughbred dancers, used to warm, dry theatres with sprung floors and non-slip surfaces, on a stage built for rock stars – strewn with roadies' nails and cables and slick with rainwater – can be tricky. Rain makes dancing on pointe nigh-on impossible and they need to be warm so they don't get injured, so pray for a warm and dry start to Sunday's fun and games. The last thing anyone wants is dancers injuring themselves but they are desperate to get on stage, whatever the circumstances – performing at Bestival is a huge thrill. After all, just because they are supremely talented and dedicated that doesn't mean that they don't enjoy partying as much as everyone else. And Jenna hopes that everyone will enjoy the ballet "set" as much as the Cure, Bjork or Primal Scream.
All in all, everyone wins. The dancers are revitalised by performing this hybrid of technically precise, awe-inspiring classical ballet to festival crowds and funky soundtracks. But festival-goers might also get their first taste of ballet and realise the amazing power, strength and grace of these remarkable athletes. Whether performed for the plush stalls or a muddy field, ballet is on the up!

The Underground Restaurant - Ssh!
At Camp Bestival this year we tried out something extremely special, The Underground Restaurant is the brainchild of Kerstin Rodgers who specialises in unusual but hearty cookery and is infamous as food blogger MsMarmiteLover - we're delighted that she's packing up her secret and very special restaurant for a magical fine dining experience on the Isle of Wight for Bestival this year.
The Underground Restaurant will be open for lunch, dinner and supper and there will even be a Pyjama Party themed midnight feast on Saturday night.

Bestival Radio 87.7FM to 'Stop Making Sense'
For those of you unaware, Bestival has its very own radio station broadcasting all weekend at the festival (Thursday at 10am through to Monday) with handy stuff like travel information on the Isle of Wight and then amazing shows hosted by some of the artists playing at Robin Hill this year.
So far they've got Friendly Fires, Claude VonStroke, The Drums, Ghostpoet, Horsemeat Disco, Soul Jazz Soundsystem, Psychemagik, Fear of Theydon, Benjamin Francis Leftwich, D/R/U/G/S, Caze Nove and of course Bestival FM’s very own Reverend Milo Speedwagon lined up for duty on the Isle Of Wight airwaves.
Bestival Radio this year is going to ‘Stop Making Sense’ on a nonsensical mission to reenact the very best elements of Talking Heads ‘Stop Making Sense’ film. With classic tracks such as Take Me to the River, Psycho Killer and Naive Melody (This Must Be the Place) to the visual accompaniment of David Byrne’s over sized suit. The radio will be taking you a surreal journey, from ghetto blaster to shadow shows the inspiring backdrop will bring the sonic airwaves to life with all heads talking of Bestival Radio.
To get an idea of what you can look forward to, check out this show from last year hosted by dan le sac and Scroobius Pip.
Tune yourselves in when you get onto the Isle of Wight on 87.7FM - not long to go now, woo-hoo!!
And don't forget to pack a radio!

Besti-mix 65: Sneaky Sound System
As you may be aware, there are only TWO WEEKS to go before Bestival 2011 kick offs in mad-fer-it madcap party style. Not that we're excited or anything. This year there are so many new amazing stages, areas and events going down in Robin Hill it's just insane, in a very, very good way. One of these is our brand-new Roller Disco, which features some of the world's very best - and loudest - soundsystems going head-to-head to rule your hips and hearts. This week's Besti-mix is a teaser for this no-holds-barred funathon, compiled by Australia's all-conquering Sneaky Sound System, who will be repping with label mates from Modular.

Having recently collaborated with Beyonce, Jay Z and Kanye West, their new album, 'From Here to Anywhere', is set to broaden their league of devotees even further. Their mix showcases their deep-rooted love of all things 4/4: a throwdown, no doubt, that they're set to bring the house down at Bestival 2011!

David Lynch in Rolling Stone
Here's a copy of an article from Rolling Stone by Greg Prato. You can read the original on the Rolling Stone website. You'll see from the article that David's very much into his meditation and to that end we've invited the David Lynch Foundation to teach you all a spot of zen at this year's festival.
As the writer and/or director of Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, and Wild at Heart, David Lynch has certainly left his mark on the world of film. On November 8th, Lynch will make his debut as a solo recording artist, when Crazy Clown Time is released on PIAS America.
With Lynch handling vocal and guitar duties on the album (aided by engineer Dean Hurley, who contributed additional guitar and drums), Crazy Clown Time features a guest vocalist, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Karen O, on the tune "Pinky's Dream."
Rolling Stone spoke with Lynch about the new album, interviewing Eddie Vedder, and the dangerous gentlemen of his films.
How did the idea come up to do a solo album now?
I've always been interested in sound. One thing led to another, and I just wanted a room to experiment with sound. I finally got a room, and then I needed an engineer. I got an engineer, and then I started experimenting. Working with Angelo Badalamenti, I always say Angelo brought me into the world of music. And the experimenting... sound is so beautiful. There are sounds that approach music, and then there is music. I started playing a guitar – the first time I played guitar was just to make a sound effect. I'm not really a guitar player. But it kind of thrilled my soul to be making something that sounded like music. I just got deeper and deeper into it.
How long have you been playing guitar for?
Well, let's see... maybe ten years. It seems like after ten years I'd be real good, but I'm not. My son is good.
Who else appears on Crazy Clown Time?
My friend Big Dean Hurley, who is the engineer. Together, we wrote everything and played everything. There's one guest vocalist.
And that's Karen O, on the song "Pinky's Dream."
I've got a great music agent, Brian Loucks, at CAA [Creative Artist Agency]. I'm not technically with Brian, but he's been a friend for years. He was around in the days when I was working with Angelo and Julee Cruise. From time to time, Brian brings people by, and he brought Karen O by about maybe seven or eight years ago. Nothing happened that time, but this time he brought her by, I had these lyrics for "Pinky's Dream," and Dean and I had tracks. So Karen just went in the booth and started doing her own experimenting, and "Pinky's Dream" was born.
Does the album title have any specific meaning?
"Crazy Clown Time" is the name of a song. It is, in a way, speaking about the world as it is these days.
What are some of your favorite tracks?
I love "Crazy Clown Time," "Pinky's Dream," "Stone's Gone Up," and "Speed Roadster." They're all a little different. The blues inspired the album, but it's not a blues album – it drifted. I've been turned on lately to Gary Clark Jr. Gary Clark Jr. has got the stuff. It's this Chicago electric blues, and it just comes out of him. I heard about him recently – this is my kind of music. But this guy is incredible. That's the impetus. It was what Dean and I would call "modern blues." It sort of started driving the boat. But the songs aren't really blues.
Besides Clark Jr., who are some of your other favorite music artists?
All the great ones. But I really like John Lee Hooker, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Elvis Presley. I like Lykke Li, I like Au Revoir Simone. There's so many really good artists.
Are there any plans for playing shows in support of Crazy Clown Time?
No. Unfortunately, we're a studio band. I don't think a tour is going to happen.
I recently saw a clip of you interviewing Eddie Vedder for the upcoming Pearl Jam documentary, Pearl Jam Twenty.
Eddie Vedder took part in a concert that we put on at Radio City Music Hall, to raise money to give transcendental meditation to students, homeless, post-traumatic stress sufferers, and a lot of other people. I got to interview a bunch of people that took part, and Eddie was one of them. It went real good. Eddie's a really good guy – really easy to talk to. And he's a musician. I don't know what it is – I think musicians, for the most part, they enjoy life more than the others.
What are some other projects you're working on currently?
I'm working on a documentary of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, I just took part in a documentary of a 16-country tour I did on meditation, consciousness, and peace. And I'm working on another new film, but it's not there yet. I just finished a one-minute film for the Austrians. They have a festival in Vienna called Viennale.
Lastly, who is a more dangerous gentleman, Frank Booth or Marcellus Santos?
That's a good question. I'd rather hang with Frank Booth. I'd rather chill with him, and wait for a booty call, than with Marcellus.

Bestival Art Posters: Mogwai, Paloma Faith
As we mentioned right here on the blog a few weeks back, this year - brand new for Bestival 2011 - we super proud to present our first ever Bestival art poster competition winners, which we'll be previewing exclusively on Besti-blog.
Over the past few months we've thrown open the floodgates to the country's best young illustrators to dream up iconic poster artwork inspired by their favourite act playing at this year's Bestival. And the poster designs are gonna blow your socks off.
We'll be showcasing the winning 10 entries in a exhibition on-site and screen-printing 100 copies of each, which - if you're quick - you'll be able to snap up at the Screenadelica poster shop (all proceeds go to Bestival's charity!).
More details on that soon, but for now, marvel at I Love Mel's stupendous Paloma Faith poster (above) and Cameron Leadbetter's iconic homage to Mogwai(below).

More details on that soon, but for now, marvel at I Love Mel's stupendous Paloma Faith poster (above) and Cameron Leadbetter's iconic homage to Mogwai(below).
UNICEF at Bestival 2011
Whether in rain or sunshine, passionate volunteers have been inviting festival goers to join our photo petition to the Chancellor and the Climate Change Secretary. Thousands of festival goers have joined our cause - and got the chance to be a mermaid or flying boy!
We have met amazingly supportive musicians along the way, like the members of Stornoway (pictured), who performed a gig at our stall at the Isle of Wight Fesival! And Paloma Faith who said:
“I’m supporting UNICEF UK’s campaign to Get Children Climate Ready. Children are the most vulnerable to climate change and the least responsible, please join UNICEF UK’s photo petition and let's make the Government Get Children Climate Ready” - Paloma Faith
Bestival is our final summer festival and we hope you can join us in saying goodbye to the summer. Come and say hello at our stall and remember to take action now.
So... mermaid, flying boy, merman… who will you be?

David Lynch to release solo LP on Sunday Best
Visionary filmmaker David Lynch will make his solo debut as a musical artist this Autumn with Crazy Clown Time. Produced and written by Lynch, the album’s 14 original songs spotlight him on guitar and vocals. And we're particularly pleased to announce that our very own independent record label Sunday Best Recordings will release the full album worldwide on November 7.
Two tracks that we released late last year – Good Day Today and I Know – already have American and British critics buzzing about the album. Los Angeles Times writes: “Frightening effects and mysterious lyrics: this is Lynch's most unexpected venture to date.” The BBC declares: “Now David Lynch leaves his stamp on the music world as well...” The Washington Post adds: “Every bit as pleasantly odd as you might imagine from Lynch.” NME calls it: “the sound of a creative genius dipping a toe in a new medium.”
Check out gooddaytoday.info for more info on this release.
David Lynch - Good Day Today / I Know by Sunday Best
Through the years, Lynch has collaborated frequently with others on various musical projects – composer Angelo Badalamenti (Twin Peaks), Polish pianist Marek Zebrowski (Inland Empire), plus Sparklehorse & Danger Mouse (Dark Night of the Soul). Crazy Clown Time, however, marks the first time Lynch steps into the spotlight alone.
“The love of experimenting with sound and music is what was driving this boat,” explained the self-taught ‘non-musician’. “All of the songs on the album started as a jam. The jams eventually found a form and lyrics appeared.”
Lynch recorded Crazy Clown Time over several months at his own Asymmetrical Studio with engineer Dean Hurley, who contributes guitar and drums to several songs. The recording process, Lynch recalls, was filled with happy creative accidents. “There were so many accidents; this album should be in the hospital.”
The result is a collection of dark songs Lynch has described as “modern blues.” Filled with foreboding soundscapes, hypnotic rhythms and enigmatic lyrics, Crazy Clown Time will surely resonate with fans of Lynch’s films, but should also appeal to listeners who appreciate gloriously daring and quirky pop music.
The tracks released last year hint at the album’s range. The driving beat that powers “Good Day Today” also fuels “Stone’s Gone Up,” “Noah’s Arc” and “Strange and Unproductive Thinking.” While, the menacing shuffle of “I Know” also sends chills through “So Glad,” “Football Game” and “Pinky’s Dream”, which features Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Lynch’s passion for music has always figured prominently into his filmmaking, starting with his feature debut Eraserhead (1977) – which included “In Heaven,” a song he wrote with Peter Ivers – and continuing through to his most recent work, Inland Empire (2006) – which featured several tracks penned by Lynch.
Four years ago, motivated by his growing musical ambitions, Lynch became the eponymous creator of the David Lynch Music Company. Then, in 2010, he transformed his website (davidlynch.com) into an immersive digital archive that offers material released by David Lynch Music Company since its launch, plus unreleased singles, experiments and instrumentals created by Lynch and collaborators throughout the years.
Tracklisting:
1. Pinky's Dream (feat Karen O)

Bestival Arenas 2011 - Time For Tease
Now in its fifth year at Bestival, Time For Tease is one of our success stories with loads of Besti-goers returning every year for cake, champagne and dancing girls!
This year there are even more tea sittings and an even raunchier Twilight Tease sitting around 7pm each night – so everyone can get their piece of cake and burlesque action. We're also quite excited about the burlesque life drawing classes that'll be happening every evening courtesy of Dr Sketchy's.
At midnight every night at Time For Tease there are going to be three very special shows curated by Beyond The Cabaret, on Friday they've got an 80s themed extravaganza - ever seen Morrissey in just his pants and strategically placed gladioli flowers? That, and many other spectacles WILL happen. They’ve also got their traditional themed show to fit in with our fancy dress theme this year (hence the Gaga inspired pin-up pictured) – expect a Diva face off of the highest order with Queen Elizabeth I, Judy Garland, Prince and many more battling it out for no other reason than to entertain YOU. Sunday sees the return of the Time For Tease ‘Out-Of-Season-But-Still-Good-Fun-Anyway Christmas Show’- carols, Quality Street and Santa Claus – good work all round!
TOP TIP:
We often get asked how to book in for tea at Time For Tease and the answer is simple – either book online before the festival starts at timefortease.co.uk/bestival-2011.html or pick your sitting and join their ‘walk ins’ queue at the festival – at least 30 people from this queue get seated every sitting... There's also a third option this year as the Twilight Tease’s are for walk in customers only.
Bon appetit!

Besti-mix 64: Fear of Theydon
Since Fear of Theydon's heady five years as an employee of Sunday Best Recordings, during which time he managed to go from making tea badly to remixing most of the singles released on the label since 2008 under the 'Sunday Best Remix' guise, he's decided to cut loose and, in his own words, 'swan about in his pants for a while'; a noble pursuit for any man/woman, we're sure you'll agree.
However, turning such frivolity into some semblance of a semi-nude success story, he's managed to get remixes for Crystal Fighters and both Nang and Relish records since he left. Perhaps he was nobler than we realised. Knocking up whatever genre takes his fancy from the acrid warmth of his bedroom, his prolific yet meandering tune-making is turning him into a bit of a genre-spanner... but in a good way. Plans to release a Fear of Theydon LP at some point during this decade have been temporarily thwarted by the wily charms of 'Come Dine With Me', but if it ever happens, we want to be there to enjoy it. Catch his set in the Bollywood Bar at Bestival this year for a bit of a musical gala... and possibly some standard issue spandex.

Besti-mix 63: Deaf By Disco
The sun is shining, music is in the air and we're literally counting down the hours till Bestival 2011! In just over a month's time the Isle o' Wight's gorgeous Robin Hill Park will once again be transformed into a magical madcap jamboree where eccentricity rules and good times run riot, with some incredible new treats in-store and more amazing music crammed into four days of celebration than virtually anywhere else on earth. And we can't think of a better way to get into the Bestival spirit than with our latest Besti-mix, compiled by Deaf by Disco aka Jess Hughes and Nick Wakefield, who've been showing off their love for disco, techno and electronica in their sets at their club night of the same name in North Wales for some time and this year are set to bring their block-rocking vibes to Bestival. If David Bowie, Metro Area and Metronomy don't get your head nodding and hips moving, then quite frankly we suggest you seek help forthwith!

Along with the rays of sunshine, mass singalongs, brilliant live shows, inspiring arts project, incredible son-et-luminaire and a zillion other things, one of the big successes of last weekend's Camp Besti 2011 was Kerstin Rodgers' sumptuous Underground Restaurant, a deluxe, vintage-style, pop-up supper club hosted by the renowned author, innovator and charmingly eccentric Ms Rodgers aka food blogger MsMarmitelover. And she'll be bringing the very same set up to Bestival come September...for now, whet your appetites by digging into this exclusive feature by Kerstin, a one-time NME photographer, on why food and music are more than just good company...
"I'm thrilled to be playing, I mean cooking, at Bestival. I have a long association with music: starting out as a teen rock photographer for the NME. In fact I was so ignorant about how to be a proper photographer, I just turned up one day at their office with a bunch of 10 x 8 glossy prints in a plastic carrier bag and dumped it on the desk saying 'here is my portfolio'. But it seemed to do the trick. Unfortunately my first job for them was a live gig with Screwdriver. I muscled my way to the front where I befriended an NF skinhead named Hector. The minute the band came on, the entire venue rose in a mass upward pogo. After 30 seconds I was covered in spit, had lost a shoe and my flashgun. I managed 5 shots before Hector pulled me up from the floor by my belt and handed me over the crowd to safety at the back. Not an auspicious start.
"At the time I was also hanging about with the group Madness, the song 'My girl's mad at me' was written for me. My early photographs of the ‘nutty train’ came about because my studio was tiny, it was the only way I could fit all of them in. I was obsessed with rock music from a young age, but my only experience actually playing was beating the surdo (the largest drum) with a samba group.
"The rock aesthetic tends to be rail-thin with cadaverous cheekbones, not one associated with gourmandise and healthy eating. Even in my younger rock chick days, that is one area I never succeeded in. I always liked my grub too much. However there are a whole list of rock stars who love and feel strongly about food: Alex James of Blur famously makes goat's cheese on his farm; Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand wrote a food column for The Guardian; Kelis took a year off and trained to be a chef; Roger Daltry had a trout fishery; Devo frontman Jerry Casale is now a wine teacher. Steve Albini, Nirvana’s producer has a food blog. How could we forget the recipes from 'Cooking with Coolio'? Or Elvis' ‘Fools Gold Loaf’, an entire loaf filled with bacon, peanut butter and jelly, a delicacy for which he’d send a private jet to Denver...
