Odd Future's Frank Ocean drops new song

Odd Future have been blazing a trail beyond hip-hop over the last 12-months, injecting pop with a renewed sense of energy, adventure and a healthy snottiness. Renowned for their incredible live shows (where crowd surfing is par for the course) as much as their youthful anything-goes aesthetic - frankly, we can't wait for this lot to tear it up at Bestival this September.

Till then, we'll just have to content ourselves with this, a new track from Odd Ftuure associate Frank Ocean, which dropped on his Tumblr at the end of last week.

Titled ‘Thinking About You’, it’s softer than the majority of this year’s Nostalgia, Ultra album but no less potent. Download or stream it here.

Besti-mix 62: Mojo Filter

Unless you've just landed from Pluto you'll know FUN is pretty much written into our DNA at Bestival, and this over-arching ethos extends across all spheres of our annual festi - from our glorious technicolour fancy dress party (hold tight for this year's Brazilian block-party special!) to our weird and wonderful stages (new for 2011 - Swamp Shack, Roller Disco, Rizlab, Ambient Forest and more!) to our legendary live acts and DJs. And there's no better example than the curator of our latest Besti-mix, Mr Mojo Filter, a man who has fun pumping through his veins in the same way the rest of us do blood.

Renowned for tearing up the rulebook with his mixes of the Mighty Boosh, Iggy Pop and Jefferson Airplane, Mojo has literally got his on, all day long. As is his style, his Besti-mix fuses old and new oddities and familiar favourites - Billy Fury, Vampire Weekend, The Police, Timothy Leary, Todd Terje - like they'd been shacked up together for years. Idiosyncrasy is Mojo's trademark hat, and he wears it well!

R.I.P. Amy Winehouse

As most all of you will know by now, tragically Amy Winehouse was found dead at her north London home on Saturday afternoon.

Winehouse was just 27 years old. The cause of her death has yet to be established; an inquest date is expected to be set later today.

One of the 21st century's true musical greats, Winehouse paved the way for a string of successful British female singers including Duffy and Adele, but it is for her own remarkable catalogue of songs and incredible voice that she will be best remembered: R.I.P. Amy from all at Bestival.

Responding to news of her passing, Bestival curator Rob da Bank, who booked Winehouse to headline in 2008, said: "Both as a music fan and radio DJ I've been a huge supporter of Amy Winehouse over the years. I remember my good friend Ross Allen tipping me off about this great new girl just before she released her debut album and he was right on the money. Take away all the media spotlight and the lurid stories and she was an incredible songwriter with a vintage style about her and her voice. Whatever anyone else thought about her performance at Bestival it was a legendary night with all its ups and downs and I'm really proud that she played."

Mark Ronson, who produced Back to Black, Winehouse's second album, said: "She was my musical soulmate and like a sister to me. This is one of the saddest days of my life."

On Saturday night, M.I.A. posted a previously unheard track called '27' in memory of the singer, tweeting: "i recorded this song B4 vickileekx and never put it out. its a unfinished demo," before adding "R.I.P A.M.Y."

Bjork x Matthew Herbert + Omar Souleyman

In advance of her new album Biophilia, Sunday night Bestival headliner Björk will release four singles which she’s collectively naming The Crystalline Series.

First up, new mixes of ‘Crystalline’ and ‘Cosmogony’ by Grammy-nominated producer Serban Ghenea, then those long-awaited Omar Souleyman versions, in which the Syrian superstar works his magic on the songs ‘Crystalline’, ‘Tesla’ and ‘Mewal’, and then not one but two sets of remixes by Matthew Herbert: the first 12″ featuring a remix and remix instrumental of ‘Crystalline’, and the second featuring two remixes and remix instrumentals of ‘Cosmogony’.

Herbert of course has a long history of working with Björk, having remixed a number of her tracks in the past, as well as making key contributions to her 2001 masterpiece, Vespertine.

The Ghenea mixes are out this week, followed by the Souleyman versions on July 26, and finally the two sets of Herbert remixes on August 2. Everything comes courtesy of the one One Little Indian label; the CD versions of each release are available exclusively from bjork.com.

In the meantime, enjoy the original version of 'Crystalline' above!

Besti-mix 61: Tim Green

Our latest Besti-mix is from fast-rising London-based DJ/producer Tim Green, whose records have graced the likes of leading electronic imprints including Get Physical, Dirtybird and Cocoon, with the latter of these poised to release his Lemon EP, heralded by Pete Tong as his ‘essential new tune’. Besti-vid of the week: Sound of Rum 'Best Intentions'

Yes yes, we know we've already had a Besti-vid of the week this week (& that was the first for a while), but when it rains it pours in Besti-land (no joke about the rather damp Bestival 2008 intended) and we couldn't resist sharing this video from Sound of Rum with you.

'Best Intentions' is taken from their superlative album 'Balance' and is out this week backed with 'Give' and some cracking remixes by Jamie Woon, James Delay, Fear of Theydon and more. Check em, love em, buy em via iTunes here.

Besti-mix 60: Caze Nove (Firas & Jay Karim)

House music may be approaching its 40th anniversary but it shows no signs of slipping into a smoking jacket and nestling by the fire with a pack of cigars and a bunch of rose-tinted memories. Oh no. Rather it's still evolving, thanks to the likes of successive waves of young producers inspired by the past but looking for the ways to evolve the 4/4 beat. The compilers of our latest Besti-mix, producers Firas & Jay Karim aka Caze Nove, being a stellar prime example.

Having honed their craft since meeting in Sheffield a decade ago, they made their DJ debut at Fabric in January, and are set to release their first joint single on Southern Fried Records shortly. Firas's debut solo EP is also released later in the year on the label that's also home to the likes of Armand Van Helden. But perhaps the best showcase for their music is their weekly radio show on House FM.

Their mix doffs its cap to classic Chicago house with Virgo Four as its opening track and it closes with one of their own; a fitting trajectory from then to now. And one you can hear for yourself at Bestival when the boys play our legendary Afterburner on Friday night. See you down the front!

Fear of Theydon on The La's

We were very excited to get a call from The La's last week requesting that they play Bestival this year for what will be their first official UK festival appearance since 2005 and the only one they're doing this year. Result!

In today's Bestival announcement you may have also noticed a new addition to the DJ bill, a certain Fear of Theydon. This is a producer and DJ that we at Bestival have fallen hook, line and sinker for. He can seemingly only make amazing tunes and off-the-richter scale remixes... and more people need to get on board the Fear of Theydon love train.

It also happens that he's a big fan of The La's and recently wrote an inspired blog about them, and remixed one of their tracks. So without further ado, please click here, read on, check out the rest of that blog for more Fear of Theydon musical glory, fall in love, etc

Beastie Boys 'Fight For Your Right - Revisited' to be shown at Bestival - win Bestival Tickets and Beastie's Vinyl!

In support of their brilliant new album, ‘Hot Sauce Committee Part 2’, the Beastie Boys have revisited their classic video ‘Fight for Your Right (to Party)’ inviting a jaw-dropping who’s who from the film industry, including Elijah Wood, Danny McBride, Seth Rogen, Susan Sarandon, Will Ferrell, Jack Black and more to take part in Fight For Your Right – Revisited.

"It takes place in 1986 when the ‘Fight for Your Right (To Party)’ music video finishes shooting" Beastie Boy Mike D told us, "... and then the hijinks ensue. In film terms, this is a period piece."

We’re really excited to be showing this in full on the Main Stage and in the Big Top at Bestival this year.

And that’s not all, the none-more generous Beastie Boys are offering the exclusive chance to win a pair of Bestival Tickets PLUS a copy of 'Hot Sauce Committee Part 2' on double vinyl (and CD) AND selected Beastie Boys back catalogue CDs AND a DVD Video Anthology. We’ll also select five runners up who will receive a copy of ‘Hot Sauce Committee Part 2’ on CD each. For a chance to win click here and get involved!

Also, for all you vinyl-junkies out there, here's a little vid that shows how that tasty wax gets made. Mmm...

Besti-mix 59: Low Fro

Our latest Besti-mix is a showcase for new talent. Hailing from North London, 19 year old DJ/Producer Low Fro may have only been in the game for a few years but his latest remixes for our very own Sunday Best label, for Sound of Rum and Beardyman feat. Foreign Beggars, are sure to kick-start his career in style.

And if this mix is anything to go by, it won't be long before he's roadblocking clubs too. A shark-eyed snapshot of the multifarious UK bass scene, Low Fro's set takes in cuts by some of the era's experienced and ever-influential dons (El-B, Seiji) as well as new school breakthrough stars (Pearson Sound, Deadboy, Silkie) and, in doing so, creates a path for this young producer to follow...

Roll up for The Roller Disco at Bestival!

We are ridiculously excited about a brand new arena for this year's Bestival - The Roller Disco. And when we say Roller Disco, we’re not joking, we mean the mother of all roller discos. With music blasting from a giant-sized jukebox stage that will feature the hottest DJs in the world, you’ve got no choice but to get involved as the skates are vintage and best of all they’re free to hire.

Or, if someone else's wheels doesn’t quite float yer boat, you can get your own high-tops pimped with sick trucks. There’s plenty of room for revelers without wheels too and either way you’re going to want to be there. Promise.

Oh, and we should possible point out that 'disco' shouldn't be taken too literally as this venue will host shows by several of our Sound System guests including Rinse (DJ Zinc, Skream & Benga et al), Hyperdub (Kode 9, Joker, King Midas Sound & more), The Heatwave (inc David Rodigan), Digital Soundboy (inc Shy FX, Breakage and co) and Tayo's Tracksuit Party presents Fresh to Death.

Excited?! ... we certainly are.

Besti-mix 58: DJ Shepdog

Scream if you wanna go faster people cos we're taking a trip back to the old-school, to a time of  hyper-kinetic basslines, ridiculous sped-up diva vocals, Vicks, FBI jackets, smoke machines, whistle-blowing and glow-sticks (oh, we still have those) courtesy of our latest Besti-mix, a hardcore-strewn rave era throwback.

DJ Shepdog may be best-known for his hip hop & reggae mash-ups and his NICE UP! blog, but he's an old school raver at heart. Perhaps too young to experience it first hand (he was only 13 at the time), he nonetheless raved vicariously via mixtapes passed around by friends older brothers, saving up his pocket money for the odd 12" and at a weekly under 18s rave night in his home town of Hull. You know the score...

Björk to Headline Sunday night at Bestival

We've had to wait a long time to be able to tell you, so we are very pleased to finally announce that Björk will be playing her only outdoor festival show in the world this year as Bestival 2011's Sunday night headliner. And we couldn't be happier!

"I honestly can't believe Björk is coming to Bestival", explains Bestival head hippie Rob da Bank. "Without a doubt one of the most iconic musicians of the last century, Björk is always one step ahead of the pack with her music and innovations, and the new Biophilia show is jam-packed full of technology, great interpretations of her amazing catalogue of songs and some brand new corkers. The grand finale to Bestival 2011 just got better!"

Björk's unique vocal flare and experimental spark has made her one of the world’s greatest artistes and her spellbinding live shows have become the stuff of legend, so it’s a complete honour that she’s coming to our Isle of Wight shindig. In a worldwide outdoor festival exclusive, Björk will be playing a host of classic tracks and bringing things right up to date with her current hugely anticipated and inspirational musical project and album, 'Biophilia' which continues to push the boundaries of entertainment, combining music, apps and internet installations.

Head over to the Bestival website to hear her latest single, the incredible Crystalline.

Björk's Bestival headline set will also include an award-winning Icelandic female choir and will feature a range of specially conceived and crafted instruments, among them a bespoke pipe organ that accepts digital information, making it a sure fire guarantee that Bestivalites are in for a proper treat when it comes to this year’s closing set on the main stage.

Tickets are still on sale but going fast, click here for further info.
