Besti vid of the week: Games 'Strawberry Skies'

Our very first Besti vid of the week is a nostalgic gem! Featuring possibly our favourite new NY singer, the kinda wondrous Laurel Halo, the new video of the brilliant 'Strawberry Skies' from the equally ace Games, the synth-pop side project of one of the year's most consistently excellent producers, Oneohtrix Point Never. Yes, we're fans...

Directed by Josef Kraska, if this soft-focus '80s homage doesn't have you reminiscing about The Breakfast Club and Risky Business (in a good way) then you're probably too young to remember 'em!

Sunday Best F.C.!

In these times of confusion, it’s not always clear what football team you’re supposed to support, but fear not, because help is at hand friends...

Sunday Best have just sponsored a team of verile young sportsmen who have vowed to lead us to victory and give us all one unifying hope.  Please welcome to the stage.. the East Cowes Youth Old Boys football club.

Back in January 2010, we got an email from Sean, the spokesman for our athletic chums here, asking for a donation towards getting a new strip for their team; it seems the hard times were even reaching out as far as the native homeland of Bestival - the Isle Wight.

We were dismayed and only to happy to donate, simply because the thought of 11 people regularly running around on cold and misty Saturday mornings wearing the Sunday Best emblem on their shirts was an inspiration and an honour… Look at them.  They are totally rad.

East Cowes Youth Old Boys we salute you!  May the spirit of Sunday Best and Bestival make your [own] goals that little bit sweeter.

David Lynch's Sunday Best single remixed by Underworld, Skream, Sasha and more!

So, big announcement time people! David Lynch’s rather brilliant new single, ‘Good Day Today’ / 'I Know', signed to and released by your very own Sunday Best, will be remixed by a selection of big name dance producers, including Skream, Underworld, Basement Jaxx, Sasha and Jon Hopkins.

The news was announced this morning by our spiritual guru and puppet master of all things Bestival and Sunday Best, Rob da Bank, whose wise words we now turn you onto...

“First up, Underworld”

“The bad boy, Skream”

"Then Sasha”
-
“And of course, Boys Noize”

“From Scandinavia, Diskjokke”

“Simon from Basement Jaxx”

“And last but not least, Dan le Sac”

The remix package, which also includes a mix from Brian Eno collaborator and recent Besti-blog mixer Jon Hopkins, is due out in January, as part of a deluxe vinyl edition of the release, spread across two heavyweight 12″s and housed in a bespoke triple gatefold sleeve, available to pre-order now.

It’s been crafted by The Vinyl Factory, designed by Vaughn Oliver (whose past work includes Cocteau Twins, Pixies and more), and includes a signed print by the artist and a CD with all the tracks from the vinyl and digital versions.

Celebrity Sh*tmash TV!

Yo, party people! My brother-in-law Craig's done everything from work in a vegetable shop polishing aubergines to a bright sparkle to being the back end of a pantomime horse with Christopher Biggins in the front. Luckily, he's now teamed up with his mate with the same name (must be confusing at bedtime) and made some hilarious sketches for your delectation. Check 'em here at Celebrity Shitmash

DJ Shadow: live from the Shadowsphere

DJ SHADOW Live from the Shadowsphere - North American Tour 2010 promo from Dean Fernando on Vimeo.

We've been fans since way back when San Fran beat-freak and vinyl nut Josh Davis aka DJ Shadow unleashed the moody cinematic genius of Entroducing into the world...and with the likes of blunted psychedelic beat makers Fly Lo and Hudson Mohawke leading the new school in 2010, its musical influence is still being felt.

So, you can imagine how stoked we are to welcome DJ Shadow play live at Bestival 2011, where he'll be showcasing his new album (set for release in May next year) alongside old-school classics and all manner of sampledelic audio-visual trickery - for a little taster of what to expect, check the vid above, taken on his recent US tour...

David Lynch talks Sunday Best, electronic music and new album plans!

In case you've been stuck under six feet of snow and therefore been unable to get to your beloved t'internet over the last week (quite probable if you live in Aberdeen!) then let us update you dear reader: art-house god and Tinsletown legend David Lynch (yes, that David Lynch) has signed to our very own proudly independent label, Sunday Best, on which he released his first (and rather good) electronic single, 'Good Day Today', this Monday.

Scroll below or click here to hear the track, and head over to Pitchfork now to read an interview with the man himself, wherein the 64-year old director of such cult classics as Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive reveals his passion for music, his future album plans and, of course, how he hooked up with Sunday Best!

"I just love musicians," he says. "They're not all super-happy all the time, but when they're playing they're happy, and it's such a beautiful thing. I also like them because they sleep late in the morning; they're more like children."

Besti-mix 44: Jon Hopkins

We're kind of excited about this one. Our latest Bestimix is a wee bit special, compiled by one of Britain's best new young producers, singularly talented musicians and all-round good egg, Jon Hopkins.

A long-time collaborator with Brian Eno, Jon has remixed the likes of Four Tet and Wild Beasts, composed a score for Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, opened for Coldplay and created an album of restlessly experimental electronic music for Domino (phew!).

For a chap with such broad tastes perhaps the genre-straddling nature of this mix isn't surprising; it is, however, thrilling - a wide-eyed trip through Boards of Canada's uneasy ambience to Modeselektor's viciously dumb electro and Glasser's glacial pop beauty. Enjoy!

Download: Besti-mix 44: Jon Hopkins

Tracklisting:
Glasser - Apply
Nathan Fake - The Turtle
Moderat - Seamonkey
Boards of Canada - Korona
D.I.M. - Sysiphos
Tiga - Mind Dimension
Cursor Minor - Baby Universe
Modeselektor - Kill Bill Vol. 4
Nathan Fake - The Sky Was Pink (Holden Remix)

Bestival 2011: The Cure, Primal Scream, Brian Wilson, Magnetic Man and more!

This morning, our very own Lord of the Dance, Mr Rob da Bank, announced the first acts for Bestival 2011 live on Twitter - and what a pant-whetting, eyeball-popping, head-spinning collection of brilliant bands and incredible DJs they were!

Topping the bill, and playing the year's only European live performance, is The Cure.

"I’ve spent the last twenty years of my life listening to them and the last five attempting to persuade Robert Smith and the crew to hop on a ferry to our magical Isle," says Rob. "I'm still not sure what we've done right but I'm overjoyed that they are coming as Saturday night headliners. Few bands have had such a massive impact on my life (and hairstyles) so I’ll see you down the front!"

The gothic pop legends' unique brand of anthemic angst will be nicely offset by the sunshine vibes of 68-year-old Beach Boy Brian Wilson, and Primal Scream, who'll be performing their rave-era masterpiece Screamadelica in its trippy, life-affirming entirety.

Swedish pop icon Robyn will bring her sky-scraping electronic balladry to Bestival, which we're pretty excited about, and Magnetic Man (Skream, Benga, Artwork) will be on hand to do their stadium-friendly dubstep thing. DJ Shadow, who is expected to release a new album next year, will play live, as will Crystal Castles and the mighty LFO. Diplo, Pantha Du Prince and Syrian superstar Omar Souleyman are among many other highlights.

65DaysofStatic are billed as performing a live film score; Katy B, Carte Blanche, Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain, Grandmaster Flash, David Rodigan, 2 Bears, Cranes, Boys Noize, A Trak and Norman Jay complete the first round of confirmed acts.

"This year felt like a landmark year for Bestival," said Rob. "There's no avoiding the fact that we've become a large festival but I still feel we're more intimate than any of the other shows our size and, crucially, we're 100% independent. That means we book who we want to book, choose all the food stalls and traders ourselves and listen to our messageboards and fans 365 days a year to make sure we keep Bestival the best.

"Things we're focussing on for Bestival 2011 are keeping Besti as the place to see new bands, making the campsites much more of a community with better roadways to clear litter and make finding your tent easier, we're also starting to put stages at the other end of the site so it’s not just one long tunnel of stages. Hope you can make it in 2011!"

Early bird tix available here folks!

Sunday Best heads to The Social TONIGHT; free party with Rob da Bank, Sound of Rum and David E. Sugar

We're all feeling a bit jaded since those Autumnal breezes have started to permeate even the chunkiest of knitwear, so it's time for us to dust off our favourite tankards, head down to The Social [Little Portland Street] and listen to very special tunes from artists and DJs from the Sunday Best fold.

Electro wizard David E. Sugar is taking some time out from writing swoon-making hits to play a solo laptop show for us, Beatnik young guns Sound of Rum are coming down to deliver another arresting live performance, fronted by their critically acclaimed poet/rapper Kate Tempest, Sunday Best and Bestival head honcho Rob da Bank will be spinning his winter warmers early doors, running his trademark gamut of Eclectica and good times tunes, and Sunday Best All-star DJs will play the night out with whatever they've successfully pinched from da Bank's record bag...

Come on down after work and share brew. It's free and the vibe is strong.
