Bestival 2011 line up and live da Bank Twitterfest!
Whilst we’re squeezing the very last drops of fun out of 2010, plans are well and truly underway for Bestival 2011. In fact, keep 'em peeled right here as we’re ready to make our first line-up announcement at 10am tomorrow(!) via the social media madness that is Rob da Bank’s Twitter. For the first time we'll be unleashing da Bank for a Live Twitterfest where you can pick his brains, comment on stuff or just ask a question - anything, well almost anything, about the acts, new areas, special surprises or why he still has the same haircut he has since he was 12.
So, if you want to know more about 2011 ask away with a tweet tagged #bestival (don’t ask it @) from 10am and Rob will answer as many questions as he can.
Hold tight Bestivalites!

David Lynch releases 'Good Day Today' on Sunday Best, today!
We're really quite/very excited and proud (as punch) to say that today marks a new milestone for our staunchly independent label, Sunday Best, in that today's the day that legendary film director David Lynch's solo electronic single 'Good Day Today' / 'I Know', finally sees the light of day (okay, enough day references already!) on Rob da Bank's imprint, to which David Lynch has signed."I was just sitting and these notes came and then I went down and started working with Dean [Hurley, his engineer] and then these few notes, 'I want to have a good day, today' came and the song was built around that," Lynch tells The Guardian.
"[Music is] its own thing," he continues. "A still photo can be mighty powerful, a film can be mighty powerful. The world you can make in a film is incredible. Music is something that goes inside a person and it does something and it can really thrill the soul. It's another magical medium."
The creative genius behind Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive has long been preoccupied with sound, and not just as a director. He co-scored his first picture, Eraserhead (1982), with Alan R. Splet, and collaborated with Angelo Badalamenti (long his composer of choice) on the ambient oddity Industrial Symphony No. 1: The Dream Of The Broken-Hearted (1990). More recently he contributed to Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse's Dark Night Of The Soul project and worked with Marek Zebrowski on the Polish Night Music mini-album. The latter was released through Lynch's own David Lynch Music Company.
'Good Day Today' is a euphoric dance track which has drawn comparisons to Underworld and features the 64-year-old himself on vocals, while 'I Know' is a bit more cinematic and rock 'n' roll-inflected. You can listen to 'Good Day Today' in full right here:
David Lynch - Good Day Today
The single is available digitally today, only via iTunes. Also available to pre-order now is a deluxe vinyl edition of the release, including a number of specially commissioned remixes (to be announced soon!) and spread across two heavyweight 12"s housed in bespoke triple gatefold sleeve. More info and pre-order here.
This edition, crafted by The Vinyl Factory and designed by the brilliant Vaughan Oliver (responsible for album art by Cocteau Twins, Pixies and other 4AD big-hitters), also includes a signed print by the artist and a CD with all the tracks from the vinyl and digital versions.

Besti-mix 43: Man Like Me
Besti-mix 43 is an old-school 'mixtape' complete with radio-style commentary by London duo Man Like Me, a collection of songs "that were getting banged out at home" by their dads when they were kids. A taster for their live show at this Sunday's mammoth Sunday Best party at the Lock Tavern, their mix offers an insight into what made the pair "the best damn live act in the UK" (Loud & Quiet).
Johnny Langer and Peter Duffy aka Man Like Me met at school in North London, and bonded through their mutual love of Tricky, weed and skateboarding.
No surprise then that the notorious 'Tricky kid' pops up on their Besti-mix, alongside classics from Massive Attack, Steely Dan and Robert Wyatt, whose brilliant 'Shipbuilding' Johnny's dad actually wrote!
Download: Bestimix 43: Man Like Me
Tracklisting:
1. Protection - Massive Attack
2. Omar - There's Nothing Like This
3. Deaf School - What A Way To End It All
4. Steely Dan - Rikki Don't Lose That Number

Vote for the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts!
The Corn Exchange building in the centre of Stowmarket has been sitting unused for over 15 years – now you can help to bring it back to life by simply picking up the phone and calling 0871 626 88 03!
The building is the subject of an exciting project to convert it into a top quality arts centre and has been renamed 'The John Peel Centre for Creative Arts' in honour of the local legend.
This innovative project has a real chance of being awarded £50,000 by the ITV People’s Millions – but we need your help. It will feature on local ITV news today when it will be competing against another project from the region for the £50,000 funding. The project that receives the most votes will be awarded the money – so we need as many people as possible to vote for the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts.
You can vote all day today (from 9am till midnight) - it's just 10p per call and you can make up to 10 calls on the same phone...so the most it's going to cost you is an honest pound.

Dandelion Radio keep the spirit of John Peel alive with the 2010 Festive Fifty... get your votes in!
The Festive Fifty is an annual chart featuring the previous year's best tracks, as voted for by listeners of Dandelion Radio. Legendary BBC broadcaster John Peel presented the first ever Festive Fifty on Radio 1 back in 1976, and continued to do so until his sad death in October 2004. Our very own Rob da Bank then hosted the poll in 2004 and 2005 as part of Radio 1's One Music show, before Peel's former production team asked Dandelion Radio to become the new home of the Festive Fifty from 2006 onwards.
So get yourselves over to dandelionradio.com/festive50.htm to vote for your favourite tracks of 2010 and keep the spirit of John Peel alive. Voting closes on 30th November so you ain't got long...

Portishead return!
Oh yes! One of our favourite bands, the legendary Portishead, have just announced that they'll be headlining two gigs at Alexandra Palace next July. But that's not all...the 'gigs' are more like mini-festivals curated by the Bristol trio as the London leg of of ATP's 'I'll Be Your Mirror' series, and over the course of the two nights Portishead will be supported by special guests including MF Doom, Company Flow, Swans, Grinderman and Beach House. See you down the front then...

Check the video for David E. Sugar's new single 'Flea Market'
'Flea Market' is the brilliant second single to be taken from David E. Sugar's debut album 'Memory Store'. It's a breezy slice of gorgeous acoustic electro pop that will further cement his growing reputation as one of the most exciting talents around right now.
This video, directed by Thomas Knights, sees David follow up his previous 'Party Killer' video by once again getting covered from head to toe in paint ... that'll teach him for being so pretty ;)
The single's out now (click here for iTunes) and it comes with a clutch of fantastic remixes from The Finger Prince, part of Australia's Bang Gang DJ posse, London based electronica outfit Eat More Cake, artist, DJ, producer and remixer Sharooz, up and coming producers Third Party and our own Sunday Best ambient version. Check it!

Bestival: Best Major Festival 2010!
Crikey! To say that we’re completely over the moon today would be an understatement of epic proportions. The Bestival crew are beside themselves with joy after bagging the Best Major Festival Award at last night’s prestigious UK Festival Awards. We were up against the really big boys so it’s a massive achievement for us and it’s with thanks to you lot - our faithful Bestival-goers - for voting, so thank you very much indeed!"Team Bestival are very hungover today," said Robby this morning, "but pretty flipping jubilant at winning the Best Major Festival. After winning Best Medium four years out of five we thought our luck may have run out as we moved into the Major league but no! It’s a testament to all our beautiful Bestivalites who voted for us that we beat some mega competition. Thanks to all who voted and see you in a field next year!'
Jubilant co-promoter Ziggy Gilsenan added: 'I just want to say a special thanks to our super team at Bestival HQ for their continuous hard work and to everyone who has ever supported us, Channel 4, Radio 1, Ticketline, the Isle of Wight and all our partners.
"Bestival started as a family effort and continues to be a family business and who'd of thought when Robby, Josie, John and myself came up with the crazy idea of doing a special shindig in a field for like minded folk it would turn out to be the Best Major Festival! With Camp Bestival's triumph too for Best Family Festival (hurray!), it couldn't have been a better night!
"Thanks for the votes, the fans make this show what it is, and in turn we'll continue to strive to give them what they deserve, the greatest show on earth! Roll on 2011."

Man Like Me (live)
The A-Z of Rob da Bank
Jon Hopkins (DJ set)
David E. Sugar (live)
Cut A Shine Hoe Down (live)
Kidnap Alice (live)
Sombrero Sound System
Fear of Theydon
Attempting to compress a taste of our Bestival and Camp Bestival festivals into a Sunday afternoon is no mean feat, but this powerful and wildly eclectic line-up should do the trick rather nicely we reckon. BRING. IT. ON.
NB: Here's the Facebook event page so you can make sure your mates know about this... and tell em to get down there early and grab a spot as its gonna get very busy in there!

Radio da Bank: Rob in Croatia & 'Ostgut Ton' record label special!
Two shows to listen again to online this week... In one Rob da Bank dips his toe into one of Europe’s fastest growing dance music scenes, Croatia, as part of the documentary series International Radio 1. Rob meets the DJs, promoters and artists hoping to transform Croatia’s image from war torn province to clubbing hotspot. Great weather and generous licensing laws make Croatia an attractive target for international promoters, but can it survive it’s own success?
Beginning on Zrce Beach (which some people are calling the new Ibiza) Rob joins 4,000 open-air clubbers to hear techno legend Sven Vath at Club Papaya. He visits the Garden Festival where promoter Nick Colgan is leading the charge for British organized festivals, and sets sails on the Argonaughty Boat Party hosted by Crazy P before playing a sunset DJ set. Contributors include Charlie 2na (Jurrassic 5), Norman Jay (Good Times Sound System), Sven Vath, Marko from Gramophondzie, and Noah Ball - organizer of the biggest dubstep event anywhere to date, Outlook Festival in Pula.
Click here to listen again online any time this week, and here to check out some photos from the Croatia trip.

Next from The Nextmen...
The Nextmen put together one of our most popular Besti-mixes earlier this year and then came along to Bestival and created dancefloor havoc in the Chai Wallah's tent on Saturday night... which was pretty much all as expected really as these guys are established masters of their craft. Mixtape legends, badboy producers, guaranteed party rockers and some would go as far as to say a national institution; even your grandma loves them, probably.
From hip hop, dubstep, drum and bass to house, electro and disco, there's not a genre the guys won't dabble in, as showcased brilliantly on their mega-popular new (& free) podcast.
And it's great to see them delve into their reggae influences for their debut release on our mate Shepdog's NICE UP! label. Check 'Sofa' feat french MC Pupajim on this cheeky Beavis and Butthead bastardising vid...

Bestival 2010 Photography by Jamie Baker
Our mate Jamie Baker took some truly spectacular photos at Bestival this year. Check out this musical slideshow and let the Bestival memories flood on back!
The music featured is 'Paganini Rocks' - the amazing new tune by Robortom (Rob da Bank & Tom Middleton) feat. Au Revoir Simone that reworks classical composer Paganini's ‘24th Caprice’ into a club anthem (that's been 200 years in the making!) ... available to download from iTunes now.

Besti-mix 41: Numan
Besti-mix 41 showcases the sound of now, dubstep, and is jam-packed with exclusive original dubs from its creator, 19-year-old Manchester producer Numan, part of the ever-impressive Planet Mu fraternity. After cutting his production gums experimenting with grime, Numan's weighty digital sound has cut swathes across the future leaning dancefloors, distinguished as much by its soulful dancefloor classicism as its low-slung basslines, a mix of the rough and smooth, the melodic and pounding. Fans of Zomby and James Blake are already converts to Numan's sound, so what are you waiting for? A world of next level UK bass awaits...
